Project

The Forest3DTwin project is being developed and operated as part of ETH Zurich's Open Research Data initiative. It is implemented by the Remote Sensing Department of the WSL and supported by the EnviDat staff.

Further information on the project can be found on the project page.

Mission

The platform is aimed at a diverse and interdisciplinary community that benefits from access to high-resolution 3D data. At the same time, it offers users the opportunity to organize their own datasets in a structured way and secure them for the long term. The optional enrichment with detailed metadata not only facilitates internal administration, but also promotes reuse by other Projects. Each dataset receives a unique DOI, which enables precise and permanent citation - and thus strengthens the visibility and recognition of the original authors.

Utilization

  1. Create an account
Register with your e-mail address. Some mandatory information is required for subsequent publication on EnviDat, including

    - E-mail address

    - Institutional affiliation

    - Information on funding or project context

  2. Create research plots
After registering, you can create individual plots - i.e. the areas on which your surveys have taken place. In addition to the required location, date and forest type, the research plot can be described with various environmental/climate factors (e.g. development status of the forest, forest management, climate zone, etc.)

  3. Add campaigns
You can create several campaigns within each plot, e.g. for different points in time or measurement methods. In addition to the mandatory fields (e.g. sensor type, date, georeferencing type), further campaign-specific factors can also be described here (e.g. wind, recording pattern, sensor names, etc.)

  4. Quality check & publication
Before your data is published, it undergoes a formal check. This checks that all the required information is complete and correct.
New campaigns are synchronized with the local server at 00:00 (CEST). The check is linked to official working days during the beta phase, as the process is semi-automatic. The status can be seen in the profile section of this page.

  5. Publication on EnviDat
After successful verification, your plots and associated campaigns will appear on the EnviDat platform - including DOI and complete metadata description. The DOI is only reserved for the first 2 weeks and will then be registered with DataCite. No more changes will be made to the dataset from this point onwards.

Further details and step-by-step instructions can be found in the "Tutorial" section of the microsite.
